Mike feels that it is crucial to capture the spirit as well as a striking likeness of his portrait subjects. He prefers to work from a series of photos which he takes himself at a meeting with his client. Photographing the subjects in various poses and settings enables Mike to find the quintessential combination of elements that provide the foundation of a memorable portrait painting. In certain instances he will work from favorite photographs provided by his client including sepia photographs of cherished relatives.

When a client commissions a landscape, Mike usually takes his own photographs to create the unique combination of atmosphere, lighting, perspective and color that will translate into an outstanding landscape painting. For both portraits and landscapes Mike provides the client with two sketches for review prior to beginning the finished oil painting. His work is done in a realistic, yet painterly manner. He chooses only the finest materials when hand-selecting paint and canvas.
